Paul Tiulana was the recognized traditional leader of the King Island Eskimo people living in Anchorage and Nome after the island was abandoned in the 1950s. Paul grew up learning the traditional life-style of the Eskimo people and while he had only six years of schooling, Paul learned to adapt to the changing world. He was drafted during WW II and served at Nome, where an accident caused him to lose one leg. His story tells how Paul made a transition from the world of his forefathers into a modern world, showing how his wisdom served him and teaches others.
