Subtitled, "The Story of the Greely Arctic Expedition 1881-1884." Alden Todd's "Abandoned" has been called "A model account of perhaps the most ill-fated and certainly the most grimly fascinating episode in the annals of Arctic exploration…" The expedition sent 25 volunteers to the Canadian High Arctic, off the northwest coast of Greenland. The ships sent to re-supply them were unsuccessful at reaching them. By the time a crew from a naval relief ship finally reached them, after a third wretched winter, only six men survived the ordeal, including Greely himself.
