The engaging narrative and colorful illustrations of BABY ANIMALS OF THE NORTH introduce youngsters to the wonderful creatures of the North Country polar bears, caribou, wolves, fox, lynx, musk oxen and, of course, grizzly bears. An appendix at the back answers additional questions children might have about how big a walrus is when it is born or how long does a baby moose stay with its mother. Author and illustrator Katy Main was a preschool teacher in Alaska for twenty-five years. She was a member of the National Association for the Education of the Young Child and the American Montessori Society. She earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from the University of Alaska Anchorage. BABY ANIMALS OF THE NORTH grew out of Main's love for art, children, and the forty-ninth state. She researched the book for five years and eventually filled twenty-two notebooks with information about Alaska's flora and fauna. It was her hope that the book would stimulate in early readers a sense of wonder and appreciation of the animal families with whom we share the earth.
