This 17 1/2" x 24" map of Alaska was compiled for the Department of State by the U.S. Coast Survey Office and is the first known map showing the name "Alaska" for what had previously been known as Russian America prior to its 1867 purchase by the United States from Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Almost no current Alaska communities save Sitka were yet settled including Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Bethel or Barrow. The map was signed by all seven Alaska Governors living in 2017: Keith Miller, Bill Sheffield, Steve Cowper, Tony Knowles, Frank Murkowski, Sarah Palin, Sean Parnell and Bill Walker.
