Crooked Past: The History of a Frontier Mining Camp: Fairbanks, Alaska E. T. Barnette was a young adventurer who joined the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98 – after his release from an Oregon penitentiary. Barnette was one of Alaska’s most notorious con men who less than ten years after founding Fairbanks in the early 1900s was run out of the Territory. Some say the most crooked street in Fairbanks is rightly named after this legend of early Alaska.
