This book has many parts. Nearly 150 cabin write-ups placed alphabetically in more than a dozen chapters. It also contains a general introduction, a discussion about cabin location and construction, a comprehensive index, a brief history of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, lists of references and so forth. The people who built and lived in these cabins ranged from multi-generational Native families to European immigrants and American settlers who began populating refuge lands in the 1800s. Authors Gary Titus and Clark Fair have documented the structures and recaptured much of their rich past, including historic maps and many rarely viewed photographs of the cabins and the builders themselves.
